Liability generally depends on the nature of the incident. This means that your own behaviour is crucial. If they have breached their duty of care, the cardholder is usually liable. The duties of care and the question of liability are set out in your contract with the card issuer.
Your duties include:
- Keep the card safe.
- Do not pass on the card to third parties.
- Handle the PIN and passwords securely.
- Avoid obvious number combinations.
- Keep the PIN and card separate.
- Always enter the PIN in a concealed manner.
- Check card statements regularly.
- Report any discrepancies immediately.
- Have your card blocked immediately in the event of theft, loss or misuse.
- File a complaint with the police.
