The holder of a debit card is notified by push notifications every minute that several payments totalling CHF 300 are being provisionally debited from his card. The payee: Apple. But the customer has not made any purchases from Apple. It is unclear how his account was hacked.
29.07.2024 –He reacts correctly and immediately cancels his debit card at his bank. As the payments are marked "pending", he tries to stop them straight away. Unfortunately, this is no longer possible and the amount is actually debited two days later.
Payments marked "pending" are already authorised and can no longer be stopped by the bank. It is not known who authorised the payments. However, the cardholder reacted correctly and quickly. In the end, he also had a stroke of luck: Apple repaid him most of the loss.
That's why you should always #watchout. You can protect yourself against card fraud with these precautionary measures:
- Activate a notification service to receive a message when payments are made.
- Check your transactions and payments.
- Have the card cancelled immediately if fraud is suspected.
- Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
- Never click on links, never open attachments.
- Never give out login and card data.
